The Ferrari That Went Against the Grain Comes to BolognaFiere

From customer teams’ requests to class victories at Le Mans: the Daytona Competizione from the Loh Collection tells a unique chapter in endurance racing history.

If it had been up to Ferrari, the 365 GTB/4 Competizione might never have existed. The “Daytona”, considered too heavy for competition, was developed into an endurance racing car at the request of customer teams, going on to become one of the defining cars of endurance racing in the 1970s.

The Nationales Automuseum – The Loh Collection will bring the Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Competizione Series III, chassis no. 16363, to Bologna. The car will be featured in Icons of Speed, the thematic exhibition dedicated to the legendary cars of endurance racing, bringing together more than 25 competition cars.

The story of the racing Daytona began with a request from American importer Luigi Chinetti, who urged Ferrari to develop a competition version of the 365 GTB/4. The transformation was extensive: the car was lightened, adapted for the track and developed through three official series.

Chassis no. 16363, delivered to Charles Pozzi in March 1973, soon claimed victory in its class at the 4 Hours of Le Mans, finishing third overall. A few months later, at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Vic Elford and Charles Ballot-Léna once again took class honours with the Ferrari, finishing sixth overall after covering more than 4,300 kilometres.

The Daytona Competizione was never raced directly by the Scuderia Ferrari. Instead, it competed exclusively with customer teams, building a racing record defined by competitiveness and reliability in endurance events.
