Thierry Boutsen at Auto e Moto d’Epoca 2025: “No car can match the emotions of a classic”

The Belgian champion was among the stars of “75:1 – 75 Years, One Seat”, the extraordinary exhibition celebrating 75 years of Formula 1.

Among the most captivating moments of the 2025 Show, “75:1 – 75 Years, One Seat” paid tribute to 75 years of Formula 1 with a truly unprecedented showcase: thirty original single-seaters displayed together for the very first time, embodying seven decades of technical and stylistic evolution.
The exhibition told the story of Formula 1 through its real protagonists — the cars that made motorsport history.

One of the special guests at the four-day event was Thierry Boutsen, former Formula 1 driver with 163 Grand Prix starts and three career victories. His words brought visitors back to an unforgettable era of F1 — one defined by talent, instinct, and pure speed.

“Driving a Formula 1 car is something truly special”, says Boutsen.
“These are incredibly fast, lightweight machines, with extraordinary power and grip. Back in ’85–’86, we drove cars with 1,200 horsepower weighing just 500 kilos — it was an unbelievable experience. But all Formula 1 cars are unique: you don’t just get into a car, you enter a world of speed, aerodynamics, and total control, where the driver must master every element”.

The Belgian driver also reflected on how profoundly the sport has changed:“Driving will always be driving, but the technical side has evolved enormously.
With modern technology, computers, and simulators, racing has become something else entirely.
In our day, we only had a steering wheel and pedals — everything depended on the driver. Today, electronics control most of the car.
In the past, the driver accounted for 80% of the result and the car for 20%. Now it’s the opposite: without the right car, you simply can’t win”.

When it comes to Auto e Moto d’Epoca, nostalgia and passion go hand in hand: That’s exactly why I’m here. Classic cars, whether racing or road models, conveyed real emotion — even just seeing them. Those feelings have partly faded today.
Modern cars are incredibly fast, but to feel the same thrill, you need to go 300 km/h.
Classic cars give emotions that no other car can match. But that’s just the natural evolution of the world”.

Boutsen concluded by celebrating the joy of reconnecting with old friends and fellow enthusiasts in Bologna:“I’m truly happy to be here — it’s not only a wonderful show but also a chance to meet again so many old friends from my early racing days. It’s a community brought together by the same passion as ever”.
