Porsche 956: Seven Victories in Eleven Races, a Place in History

Directly from the Nationales Automuseum – The Loh Collection, the Porsche 956 Rothmans, 1984 World Endurance Championship winner, will be one of more than 25 iconic cars featured in Icons of Speed, the exhibition celebrating the legendary cars of endurance racing.

Among the major highlights of Auto e Moto d’Epoca 2026, Icons of Speed, the new exhibition bringing together the cars that have shaped the history of endurance racing, continues to take shape. One of the stars of the exhibition will be one of the most successful Porsche 956s ever built.

The Porsche 956 is the sports prototype that secured every Drivers’ and Manufacturers’ title in the FIA World Sportscar Championship from 1982 to 1984.

The car on display is the most successful of all Porsche 956s ever built. Driven by Derek Bell and Stefan Bellof, it claimed seven victories in eleven races, contributing to Bellof’s 1984 World Championship title.

In 1985 and 1986, the car was entered for the 24 Hours of Le Mans as a T-Car, the team’s reserve car. In 1985, however, it returned to competitive racing after the Porsche 962 driven by Derek Bell and Hans-Joachim Stuck was destroyed in a fire during the Monza race.

Only ten examples of the official Rothmans Porsche 956, like the one on display at Icons of Speed, were ever built.
